Welcome to Portrait!
Written by Katherine Lim ‘22
I come from a pretty sizable Asian-American community. My family is Asian, my friends were all Asian, and many of my classmates were Asian. When I came to Vassar, I knew that I would want a community like that where I could connect with people like me, who had similar heritages, upbringings, and values instilled in them. So, through ASA (Vassar’s Asian Students’ Alliance), I found Portrait.
Just from looking at the website, I’m sure you can tell that Portrait is Vassar’s all-Asian publication, a magazine representing Asians and Asian-Americans. We were founded in 2018, and are proud to say that we have grown a lot since then. Unlike the Miscellany News, we publish one magazine per semester, and everything is written, edited, and designed by the Asian and Asian-American students. Not to say anything bad about them – we aren’t competitors and, in fact, we have members on our team who are also part of the Misc.
I don’t want to go too into detail about Portrait’s history and mission because you can find that in the About section of our website. Instead, since this is the first blog post, I’ll just give you a rundown on great updates you can expect from us!

We’re really just here to record the history of Vassar’s Asian student community, and give our members a space to be heard, recognized, and appreciated. Every culture has its wonders, so let us show you the wonders of our Asian culture.
